Brummle Eatin
After Blackberry Eating by Galway Kinnell

I lu’e tae gae oot at summer’s end
atween the sonsie, cauld black brummles
tae eat brummles first thing i the morn
the stems gey jagged, a pey
they gat fu kennin yon black airt
o brummle makkin; an as I staun atween them
pu’ing the stems tae ma mou, the saftest anes
fa near as magic tae ma lip
jist as words afttimes dae, antrin words
lik sowans, squische and squeenge
mony-lettered, ane syllable junts
that I squishe, pleiter an squatter
in yon still, feart, cranreuch cauld tongue
o brummle eatin at summer’s end.
